MATERIALS IN CONTACT WITH FOODSTUFFS

Ceramic  destined to  contact with foodstuffs

The ceramic objects destined to come into contact with foodstuffs are made from a mixture of inorganic materials composed generally by an elevated part of argillaceous materials or siliceous to which are added small amounts of inorganic substances. They can be vetrified and/or decorated. So that these objects can be considered suitable to the contact with foodstuffs they have to meet - in addition to general requirements established by EC 1935/2004 and by national regulation D.P.R. 777 of 23.08.1982 and following modifications – also the specific requirements established by harmonized regulations. Indeed, the ceramic must meet in Italy and in Europe to the same requirements established by the MD 4 April 1985 and following modifications (aknowledgement of directive 84/500/EEC and  2005/31/EC). These regulations concern not only the migration of elements from the object, but also the labelling/declaration that must accompany the product in the different phases of the marketing included the retail sale.
