MATERIALS IN CONTACT WITH FOODSTUFFS

The “materials destined to come into contact with foodstuffs” are materials which can be put into direct contact with the foodstuff during all their life from the production to the transformation until the packaging. For this reason the “materials destined to come into contact with foodstuff” include installations, equipments, conveyer belts, transport instruments, films and containers of primary packaging, but also other finished handmade articles such as saucepans, ceramic or glasses. Considering the importance connected to alimentary security and the role of the materials destined to contact with food, in Italy a regulation is in force from several years. Currently many efforts are being made at community level to harmonize the dispositions present in the European area. Yet, the picture might appear complex because if the materials have to be considered suitable they have to respect not only analytical requirements, but also requirements involving for example the good manufacturing practice, the emission of declarations, or the traceability along all the production chain.
Basically, the legislation is divided into general rules applicable to all the materials independently from their nature, and in rules of specific type for some groups of materials.

Among the first group are included the community Regulation EC 1935/2004 and the national norm D.P.R. 777 dated 23.08.1982 and following modifications which basic principles establish that the material produced in accordance with the good manufacturing practices are sufficiently inert to exclude the transfer of substances to food in quantities such to:
  • Put in danger the human health
  • Imply an unacceptable modification of the foodstuff composition or
  • A deterioration of their organoleptic characteristics

To verify these requisites the regulation provides that can be adopted or modified -  if present -  specific measures for groups of materials and objects.

Chelab proposes services directed to verify the compulsory requisites both for the material regulated in a specific way and for those that they aren’t.
