Corks destined to foodstuffs
The corks are not specifically regulated. However, it is possible to apply to them the general requirements established by EC Regulation 1935/2004. As they are to, made by a natural material there should not be particular problems, provided that the corks have not been treated. However, considering the importance of the task the corks are destined to, it would be helpful to evaluate both the microbiological aspects and to determinate possible undesirable volatile substances which can be determined by an activity of research GC MS with headspace technique.
